(Late) Ramchand M. Kewalramani

[Late] Ramchand M. Kewalramani (1884-1965), born in Bhirya, Sind [Pakistan], was a B.E. [Civil] and retired Director of the Post & Telegraph Department. A respected public relations expert, he used his wide network to further the noble cause of education. In 1938, after his retirement, he founded the Sitaram Prakash Higher Secondary School in Karachi, and after Partition, courageously re-established the school in Mumbai in November 1947 to serve displaced Sindhi students.

Starting from rented premises, the school soon shifted to its own campus in Wadala and grew into one of Mumbai’s leading institutions with outstanding academic results. A strict disciplinarian and able administrator, Ramchand devoted his pension to the upliftment of the poor and needy. Deeply committed to students’ mental and physical development, he personally mentored them as a guide and benefactor. His missionary zeal continues through his grandson, Prakash, who upholds the high ideals he established.

As Educationist

  1. Ramchand Kewalramani founded Sitaram Prakash Higher Secondary School, initially at Karachi [Sind] in 1938 [after retirement from Post & Telegraph Dept.].
  2. After partition, he was one of the very few educationists, who restarted the school in Mumbai in the same name, in Nov. 1947, just to meet the dire need of displaced Sindhi students.
  3. Initially the school started at the rented premises of Robert Norway High School at Grant Road, but in a year or so the School was shifted to its own premises in Wadala, Mumbai.
  4. The school under the able leadership of Ramchand, took rapid strides and today it is one of the best schools in Mumbai with almost 100% results in Higher Secondary examinations. Ramchand was an able administrator and strict disciplinarian. His pension money [after retirement from Post & Telegraph Dept.] was earmarked for upliftment of poor & needy.

Special programmes / sports are evolved for the mental and physical development of students.

Missionary Zeal:
Even though Ramchand expired in 1965, his missionary zeal continues unabted. His grand son Prakash, who is now the Managing Trustee, has been in custodian of lofty ideals and standards, set by late Ramchand.

  1. Ramchand was a renowned public relation man. He had developed useful contacts, which helped him in furthering noble cause of education.
  2. He spent long hours in school to look into the student’s needs, their progress in studies and their family background and acted as their friend, philosopher and guide.
