(Late) Hashu Advani
Late Hashu Advani, fondly known as "Hashuji" for his warm and friendly nature, was born on 22 February 1926 in Hyderabad, Sind [now in Pakistan]. He was highly educated, holding degrees in Arts, Commerce, and Law [B.A., B.Com., LL.B.], which laid the foundation for his lifelong public service.
He made outstanding contributions to education by co-founding the Vivekananda Education Society with Jhamatmal Wadhwani and establishing numerous colleges across diverse disciplines. Renowned for his integrity and popularity, he was elected three times to the Maharashtra Assembly and twice to the Municipal Corporation, also serving twice as a Minister. A devoted servant of the Sindhi community, he was widely regarded as a leading torchbearer of Sindhyat and Sindhi culture.

As Educationist
Hashuji as he was popularly called, made significant contributions in the field of education in association with Shri Jhamatmal Wadhwani. He founded Vivekananda Education Society in 1962. The Society with its excellent track record has grown from strength to strength. Today, the Society has campus of seven buildings in Mumbai, which imparts education to over 12,000 students. Vivekananda Education Society has 19 permanent institutions. It has a Creche & Day Care Centre for toddlers, 3 preliminary, 3 primary and, 3 Secondary Schools. It has 2 Junior Colleges, and a Degree Colleges in Arts, Science & Commerce. It has 2 Polytechnics, 1 Engineering College, 1 Vocational Guidance Bureau and a Post Graduate College in Management Studies. He also founded Chembur Colony Yuvak Mandal, which runs school for Hearing impaired children etc.
Additional Information
- Throughout his public and political career, Hashuji shunned publicity and constantly refused to accept awards, honours and other forms of recognition.
- He became Minister twice in Govt. of Maharashtra. During his ministership, he initiated several development projects - noteworthy being sanctioning of extra FSI to Educational Institutions & Hospitals. He was on several Govt. bodies and charitable trusts. In short, he was a genuine social worker dedicated to community service. He also made significant contributions to the ‘Rehabilitation’ effort of Sindhi community after partition.
He expired in July 1995.
